Hanalei Day Spa offers relaxation and rejuvenation

HANALEI — One of the few business located past Hanalei town on a beautiful stretch of highway on the North Shore is Hanalei Day Spa/the Ayurvedic Center of Hawai‘i, which offers the type of tranquility many may be seeking during these stressful times. Darci Frankel, founder of the center and a certified Ayurvedic practitioner, licensed massage therapist and yoga instructor, moved to Kaua‘i nearly 10 years ago after a client to whom she taught private yoga classes invited her to stay.
“It’s good Feng Shui if someone asks you to stay,” Frankel said. “All my big changes in life have come by invitation.” Frankel’s extensive background in yoga and Ayurveda — a system of traditional medicine native to India — separates her business from others like it, as the spa’s treatments are geared toward obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “Ayurveda is a complete system of healing. It’s from India, but one does not have to eat Indian food or be Indian to utilize the wealth,” she said. She studied the ancient form of treatment with Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico and has been practicing the healing system ever since.
While she only teaches private yoga lessons now, one will often find Frankel at the spa with a warm smile, filled with boundless ideas for helping a person feel relaxed and serene. “Cleansing and rejuvenating; people really need that right now,” she said. The Hanalei Day Spa offers a variety of treatments including couples’ massages, body wraps, body scrubs and facials. “At the spa, we focus on all types of body treatments and what I call ‘the massages of the world,’ from Ayurvedic warm-oil massage, single and tandem, to Zen Shiatsu and everything in between.” Frankel says that a person can benefit from any of these “a la carte” experiences or they can also embark on a more personalized healing program called Pancha Karma. According to her Web site, when Pancha Karma is undertaken, a “deep physical, mental and emotional healing is often experienced as a result” and “people report a feeling of lightness in the body and clarity of mind, the weight naturally balances.” The program typically lasts for seven days and includes daily oil massages and steam treatments, as well as fresh, healthy food. “Pancha Karma is the cornerstone program within Ayurveda,” she said. Frankel said she has the only facility on the island with four treatment rooms, including two couples’ rooms; one inside the spa and one beachside. “We’re a smaller, open-air day spa, and I’m the only real beach-side massage and authentic Hawaiian hale on the island,” she said. “All these elements really contribute to a special place.” Frankel said that even though business has slowed down recently, she has faith that it’s only temporary.

Known for its hidden jewels, Kauai’s Hanalei is considered one of the most tranquil and scenic places in Hawaii. Adding to that calm appeal, Hanalei Day Spa has recently introduced a variety of treatments appropriately called “Massages of the World.” True to its name, the menu represents unique and exotic massage techniques from around the globe.

“We offer a number of very unique therapies,” explained Darci Frankel, Hanalei Day Spa owner. “From A to Z, Ayurveda to Zen Shiatsu, we can provide massage treatments that many other spas don’t offer.”

The spa’s “Massages of the World” offerings include familiar techniques like the Swedish massage, as well as many less familiar. Abhyanga, the Ayurveda warm oil massage, is Hanalei Day Spa’s signature treatment. The traditional rhythmical massage from ancient India involves warm herbal oils that are poured onto and massaged into the body.

For an authentic Hawaiian experience, Hanalei Day Spa provides Lomi Lomi, a massage treatment that can take place in the spa’s beachfront thatched-roof hale (hut). Specifically to release tension, the spa offers Neuromuscular Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy and Myofacial Release.

Therapists also conduct assisted stretching and joint mobilization, pregnancy massage, polarity therapy and structural integration — a soft tissue manipulation technique also known as Rolfing. Zen Shiatsu, Jin Shin Jyutsu, aqua cranial therapy (similar to Watsu), lymphatic drainage, spinal touch, therapeutic touch and hot stone massage are just a few more of the many specialized therapies available.

“We have seasoned therapists who are experienced in a wide variety of specialties and techniques,” Frankel noted. “If clients are seeking an unusual massage treatment, it’s pretty likely we have a therapist who knows how to do it.”

In addition to massage selections, Hanalei Day Spa features body scrubs, body wraps, facials, body waxing, scalp treatments, manicures and pedicures. The cozy facility is equipped with three private treatment rooms, two bathrooms with showers and an outdoor massage hale. Yoga classes are held twice weekly.

Hanalei Day Spa, located in Ha’ena on Kauai’s north shore, is featuring a new Ladies’ Spa Party that provides private use of the spa facilities for treatments and refreshments.

“This was designed for bridal parties who want to have exclusive use of the spa facility for a few hours of pampering,” says Darci Frankel, owner of Hanalei Day Spa. “But any small group of ladies would enjoy this package—sisters, mothers and daughters, friends, birthday parties or showers. The Ladies’ Spa Party is available for groups of at least five women, with a minimum booking of $200 in treatments per person.
